European Union Prize for Literature 2025 – The Laureate and Special Mentions

The winner of the 2025 European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) was announced during the Book World Prague fair. The Grand Prix was awarded to Italian author Nicoletta Verna for her novel I Giorni di Vetro (The Days of Glass), published by Einaudi.

Special mentions were given to Philippe Marczewski from Belgium for Quand Cécile and Sheila Armstrong from Ireland for Falling Animals. This year’s shortlist featured 13 emerging authors from an equal number of European countries, including Greek author Makis Malafekas with his work Deepfake.

The EUPL recognises emerging fiction writers from all 40 countries participating in the Creative Europe programme, showcasing the continent’s creativity and literary diversity. At the same time, it promotes the cross-border circulation of literature through translations and international exposure. The EUPL is organised by a consortium of associations comprising the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) and the European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF), with the support of the European Commission.
