The Cyprus Democracy Summit (CDS), which will be held on 23 April 2024 at the University of Cyprus, is a dynamic platform dedicated to igniting discussions in the public sphere about the future of democracy, both within our country and on a global scale. It serves as a catalyst for cultivating innovative ideas and tools that strengthen democracy and enhance democratic participation. The CDS aims to highlight crucial matters, including citizens’ perspectives on democracy and its institutions through research data, advancements in navigating the challenges of democracy in the digital age, the reinforcement of participatory and deliberative governance, and the connection between citizens’ well-being and the quality of democracy. The Summit is a dynamic forum where thought leaders, experts, and stakeholders converge to shape the discourse on democracy’s evolution, encouraging collaboration and innovation for a resilient democratic future.
CDS will center around three key thematic pillars featuring keynote presentations, dynamic panel sessions, networking opportunities and interactive Q&A sessions. The Summit will be addressed by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides and by the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, Annita Demetriou. Among the distinguished speakers are the Executive Director of Global Education Network Europe, Liam Wegimont, the Minister of Education, Sport and Youth, Dr Athena Michaelidou and the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou.
The Organisation for European Programmes and Cultural Relations, which operates the CERV Cyprus National Contact Point, will present a speech titled “How is the EU supporting open, democratic, equal and inclusive societies based on the rule of law?”.
CDS is organised in light of the upcoming European Elections, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Cyprus’ accession to the European Union.
